The theme powering this website is now available for public release to users of the self-hosted version of WordPress (not WordPress.com, yet). It’s an easy to use theme called Function, and it has been designed to be a good workbench for blogs and online magazines.
Click on the thumbnail on the left for an actual screenshot of the theme (single post).
The theme looks a lot like this site right here at stocktradingonline.net, plus and minus a few features. Mainly, it is more blog-like (chronological entries on home and archives, like any standard theme), and includes a different background image (a simple bokeh, blueish composition).
* If you prefer having the pages as a drop-down, instead of the categories, you can download the modified theme files here.
** If you wish to customize the background and know your way around PhotoShop, you can download the PSD (5MB).
Some details about this theme:
- Ready for WP 2.9.1+;
- 6 widget-ready areas (1 in the header, 1 in the sidebar, 4 in the footer);
- Threaded comments (WP 2.7+);
- 3 level drop-down categories menu, using jQuery;
- Gravatars enabled in comments;
- Valid xhtml and css (some css only valid as css 3);
- Tested on Firefox 2+, Safari 3+, Opera 9+, Chrome 2+ and IE8, IE7 and IE6;
- Tested and ready for the wp-pagenavi plugin from Lester Chan, for better navigation.
Questions and additional information:
-
Can I modify this theme?
You are certainly welcome to modify this theme to your taste! Get in touch if you would like particular customizations, such as integrating a custom header, logo etc…
-
How do I change the sidebar, header and footer modules?
You can do so using widgets. Go under the Appearance tab in the WP admin panel and locate the Widgets link under it.
-
How do I display a page full-width? With a sidebar? With or without comments?
By default, pages on this theme display with the sidebar and without comments. To enable full-width pages, or comments on pages, you must choose the appropriate page template from the screen in which you edit your pages. In WP 2.8.6+, simply go to the right of the screen and find the Attributes tab. Under it, find the Template menu and click on the drop-down to see the page templates available.

Thanks for a great theme!
I just put it on my site.
I would like to know how to change the width of the whole site so its more wider? My site has a lot of screenshots (dealing with computer problems et) and sometimes the screenshots are wide and don’t fit.
Is there an easy way of changing the width of the middle/main block so it’s wider?
Many thanks and keep up the great work!
I’m passing by just to say THANK YOU!
This theme is really nice and I’m using it on my blog.
I’ll make a few modifications so it can suit me better.
Really,
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Thanks for nice theme
Thanks very much for your efforts!
I’m using a slightly modified version of this theme on my website now. The modifications are being kept in a child theme available on GitHub. If you see anything you like in these modifications, you’re more than welcome to merge them back into your own work.
wonderful theme!
thanks!
Found your website very informative, as a financial wealth management company your articles have proven to be very good, thank you.
I will use this theme in my own blog.
It’s very nice, like the “Pixel” theme :)
Those themes are even better than some commertial themes.
Thank you for sharing this!
The theme is looking very nice. Thanks for sharing mate.
Hello, first and foremost this is a very good theme. Thank you for developing it.
I am curious if and when there is an updated release of this theme would a changelog be documented? I have made a lot of changes to the theme and added features I wanted on my blog. If a changelog was documented rather than making all my changes again I could update the theme with the recorded changes.
Once again thank you,
JosephW
Great theme. One tiny thing is that I find the title=”page name” little box that appears every time I roll over the top nav buttons very annoying. Been trying to find out what generates them and delete it. Any handy pointers as to where I look. Thanks once again.
Hello,
Great theme.
Two questions here,
1. How to add Google Custom search in this theme?
2. How to add author name for each post?
Please explain in detail.
Thanks.
Hi,i like this theme,but i found i cant display the comments reply like yours,sorry for my English,i hope you can undestand what i mean,thanks
How do I change it so that there are only a limited number of posts on the homepage? Some posts are lengthy and will take away from the useful footer. Any suggestions?
hi and thanks for this AWESOME theme! i have a question. i want to change the banner and background. we figured out how to change the sizing of the banner, but the background does not go all the way to the bottom. you can view the test site here and scroll down to see the problem http://collectedmoments.com/test/
thanks again!
nevermind i figured it out
Thanks for the great theme, this theme rocks.
One question,
Instead of default search located at the header and footer, can I change it to Google custom search? Please guide.
Hey Sam, first up – great theme! I love it :)
Quick query: I’m trying to align a picture with text next to it using a table with one row and two columns. I.e.
pictext
However when I do this my pic gets aligned at the top of it’s cell and the text gets aligned at the bottom of it’s call (starting on the bottom line of the pic, like if you don’t use a table). Changing the cell align and valign attributes don’t seem to affect anything.
I tried copy pasting the same code into a blogger post and previewing it, and it worked as desired with the pic next to the text.
So I guess this has something to do with the theme? Any idea of how I could adapt it?
Thanks!
Barry
VN them thx :)

Hi Sam,
Very nice theme, I’m using on my webblog and I’m translate this for myself..
how i can change the color of the grey navigation bar, when the mouse is over?
Hi. You can change it in the superfish.css stylesheet.
Thanks!! I’ve missed it!
I like this Theme, but would want to adapt it to my project. I want to have 2 sidebar to the left of the content, so that their widths are as follows: 500px (content) – 285px (new sidebar) -155px (sidebar). I’ve tried but they either do not appears the new sidebar, or the new sidebar appears, but below (not the same height as the other sidebar) … Can anyone give me a hint?
Hi Gabriel. The best hint I can give is to be careful with your floats, margin and padding…
Great theme! I wonder if this theme works with WordPress 3…
Hi! Yes, it does work with WP 3.0.
Hi,
first i want to say that this is a very nice theme! congratz!
but i have a small problem with comments, maybe you would be so nice and can tell me where i made a stupid mistake :P
when i klick on the “leave a comment” link, everything works fine except there is no comment box to enter a text, the boxes for name, email and website work fine…
sry for my english :)
greets
michael
Hi Michael,
This is not the theme’s default behavior. It is likely caused by some styling introduced from something like a plugin, which overrides the default attributes for the selector associated to that textarea. To correct this, you can try to disable the plugin that causes this or try to adapt the CSS accordingly.
Good luck!
Hi,
thanks for your reply.
i am sry that i didnt thout of this…
fyi, there is a problem with the “Lightbox 2″ plugin
when i find a workaround i will post it here

Has anyone tested Function with WP3.0? I would like to upgrade, but am not sure if it works. Thank you!
Hi Jay. There shouldn’t be any issue with WP 3.0. This blog right now is running 3.0 without any problem, and it’s basically the same theme.
Sam,
Thank you for the response. I just performed the upgrade and can confirm that it went smoothly. Thank you for such a great theme!
hi sam
i used your theme on my site,
i have a problem on H1, H2 tags leveling, i want my post title appear in search engine as H1 tags if its on single page. could you help me?
thank you
Hi. It’s not complicated to do, but it would be a little long to explain here…
I am getting a javascript error on every page on my site and am currently trying to diagnose this. It appears that your site is delivering the same thing. This is in IE8 and here are the error details:
Webpage error details

Hi Jay,
Yes, I see what you’re talking about. I’ve tried a few things and I fail to see why IE spits out this error. Does this result in an error pop-up on your site, or simply an icon in the status bar?
S
Sam,
Fortunately, there is no pop-up. It is just an annoying small exclamation mark in the bottom left corner.
Yeah, that’s what I thought. I can’t currently find what is causing this, or find any undesired behavior because of it. For now, I’ll just have to put it in my little list of Explorer unsolved mysteries…
Hi Sam,
Love the theme, I’m using a slightly tweaked version on my blog. Thanks.
The problem JL describes is caused by a conflict with Lightbox2.
In header.php, if you change
$(document).ready(function() {
$(‘ul.sf-menu’).superfish({
speed:’fast’,
delay:0
});
});
to
jQuery(document).ready(function() {
jQuery(‘ul.sf-menu’).superfish({
speed:’fast’,
delay:0
});
});
It will sort that error out.
Hi, I’m hoping you can be of assistance. I’m using the Function theme and love it and I’ve just discovered that any time I try to make a comment on any of my posts, I’m told the following.
“Page not found” – “What you are looking for doesn’t seem to be on this page…” I go to the dashboard as all posts need to be approved by an Administrator and there are no posts for approval. I’m stuck & confused…..
Never mind…. found the problem… it was the .htaccess file
I used one and noticed that I forgot to update everything that said yourdomain.com to the URL of the blog.
I managed to find out that it was the .htaccess file by the topic “290418” on the WordPress support site.
Great, glad you figured it out.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful template, can you tell me how to customize the background add a sidebar, I added the code in the sidebar page. But there is no white background. Feelings do not match the default format.
Hi Eric,
Thanks for the comment. I’m not sure that I understand the issue you are experiencing. Can you rephrase that?
S
Actually, one other (possibly noobish) question for you:
How do I change the color of links? They are appearing awfully light. Is this something I would modify in the stylesheet? Thanks!
Hi Adam,
Yes, the links can be changed in the stylesheet. You can start by modifying the general selector for links (a {color:#0D3F6F; text-decoration:none;}) and apply your desired modifications on other selectors if necessary.
S
Hi,
I really like your theme and have implemented it on my blog. However, there is a minor issue. When viewing an individual blog post, most templates have the option to “view previous post” or “view next post” and these links do not appear. I think that this is an important navigation feature and am thinking about hacking the code to add it. Here is the WordPress page discussing the template tags: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/previous_posts_link (I tried just using the php tags and they did not work and so I am forced to dig deeper into the code.)
Have you played with this at all? Is there any chance you might be adding this to the template?
Thank you.
One quick update. Here is the code that I am currently playing with. It needs to be inserted into single.php. It works, but I am struggling with the styling. It also misbehaves if the previous blog post titles get too long or if there is a comment on a previous post.
</div
Hi Jay,
thanks for your feedback on the theme. I agree that this is a nice feature, and I might very well integrate it in a next version of this theme and other themes I have released. Are you still having trouble with the styling? Maybe I can help out.

Hey there! Awesome theme. Only one problem: my categories don’t seem to all fit on the grey bar. How can I make the category list extend wider than the main area?
Here is my website:
http://www.livingwithanerd.com
As you can see, “Site Announcements” isn’t on the grey bar…it keeps going below it. Any tips? Thanks!
Never mind, I got it figured out! Thanks again for your awesome theme!
Great, happy you figured it out! Thanks for the comment!
Great, happy you figured it out!
Great Theme!!! I definily will use it!
Thanks Sam,
For a very, very nice theme! Have you made others? I would certainly be interested in checking them out.
Keep up the good work,
Peter
Happy you like it, Peter. The latest free releases can be found at http://85ideas.com/.
Best,

Sweet, already implemented function on:
http://www.softwareheadline.com/
What about paid themes, where do you hide them?
Best,
Peter
Great, I’m happy to see it in action! As for paid themes, I don’t have any yet. Perhaps in the future…
Best,

Hi… Thanks for your great theme. But why the text is not smoothed when using Chrome?
Hi,
Thanks for the comment. Text-shadows are a CSS3 thing. Not all browsers display them correctly yet. Right now, I think Chrome displays it partially (only the first argument). It’s likely to change on a future Chrome update. CSS3 is around the corner!
Best,
S
hi sam
thanks for your great theme, i am using on it.
i have a question, how can i hide blog title and description?
Hi,
you can modify those in the ‘settings’ menu in your admin panel, under ‘general’. To delete them altogether, however, you need to take them out in the header.php theme file. The division to look for is called ‘logo’.
Best,
S
how to move widget to the top of the posts?
I’m not sure that I understand exactly where you wish to move the widget, but the current widgets in the theme can’t be dragged to other places. If you wish to create another widget, however, it is not hard at all. You can look at the current widgets on theme and in the function.php theme file for inspiration.
Hi
I have another question for you:
In your ‘Stocktradingonline’ example, you have 2 pages listed. They both work like ‘catagories’ where you can add seperate post. How do I achieve that?
I wants pages in the navigation bar to work that way.
Thanks
Hi again,
on this site, I have inserted the links manually. If you want your menu to display various links, it is the easiest way. Otherwise, I have made available 2 versions of the theme (which you can download above): one with the categories in the main menu and another with the pages in that menu.
Best,
Sam
Hi
Made a post last night but it’s vanished? lol
This is a great theme and it’s the perfect platform to develop on. I love the clean pro appearence and the attention to detail. I am using your template to develop a site and I have 2 questions please . . . .
(a) How can I insert the ‘Catergories’ section into the gray ‘menu area?
(b) How do I add & remove items from the very tip-most menu?
Many Thanks
Hi Gary,
thanks for you comment. To answer your questions:
a) categories display by default in this section. There are no particular actions to perform, other than create the categories.
b) the best way to do so may be to add links manually, in the header.php theme file.
Hope this helps,
Sam
Hi Sam
Thank you for your prompt reply . . . .
I installed the 2 versions of your excellant theme. Both versions don’t seem to inherit the Catagories in the main gray menu bar.
My site is a http://www.lookalikesforhire.com
The Catagories only seem present in the sidebar (right side) widget?
Maybe I am overlooking the obvious mate? I really appreciate your help.
Thanks
Gary
Hi Gary,
I’ve checked again, and this version of the theme – http://stocktradingonline.net/downloads/Function.zip – does include categories in the main gray menu. They are called in the following fashion:
<?php wp_list_categories(‘sort_column=name&title_li=&depth=3′); ?>
The theme installed on your site right now must be the one with the pages in that menu. Both versions of the theme have the same name (my mistake perhaps), so it might be that you did not activate the good one?
S
What a beautiful theme and I am gratefull you released it for free. I am currently using your theme to develop my webite.
I have a question:
(a) How can I move the ‘Categories’ into the gray menu?
(b) How do I add & remove items from the very top menu?
Many Thanks
Hello Sam,
Thank you for this terrific theme. I’m new to WordPress, and to PHP/CSS. I’ve learnt a lot in the past week since I’ve started experimenting. I’ve modified your theme quite a bit to suit my branding. One thing I can’t seem to figure out, I wonder if you could help me: I’d like to make the header fixed to the top.
My website is (temporarily) at: http://wordpresstest.outwithdad.com/
Probably later this week I’ll switch it from “wordpresstest” to “www”.
Cheers!
Hi Jason,
I’m glad you like the theme, thanks. I love what you did with the fonts, backgrounds etc.
By ‘fixed’, do you mean that the entire header would stay on top as users would scroll down? That’s a good question. What you will wish to take advantage of is the ‘position:fixed’ CSS attribute.
Take a look at this article: http://www.noobcube.com/tutorials/html-css/fixed-header-footer-layout-a-beginners-guide-/. It’s fairly well written, perhaps it will help. Let me know how it goes!
S
Yes- that’s exactly what I’m talking about: keeping the header at the top of the screen when scrolling down. Thanks for the link. I’ll check it out, see if I can sort it out.
Cheers, and thanks again for the great theme.
Love the look. I just made my first blog last night. How can I use this theme for my wordpress blog? Keep in mind I’m a newbie.
Thanks
Hi Christopher,
the first thing to know about this theme is that it’s for the self-hosted version of WordPress, not WordPress.com users. If you are indeed using WordPress on your server, you should consider reading this ‘getting started’ guide: http://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_Started_with_WordPress
Best,
S
Hi Sam!
Great template! But I have one question. In my opinion, the fonts don’t seem to be as sharp as on a normal webpage. What is the matter? Right now, the text I am writing is absolutely sharp as usual, but when I scroll up the the letters of the whole post, livemarkets etc. they are not that sharp and the letters in your adsense.
Kind regards
Maliken
Thanks!
I think you are referring to the use of CSS text-shadows. I have used text-shadows to add smoothness to the text all around the theme. Indeed, the fonts won’t be as sharp; the intention is to give them a more rounded shape. To remove this feature, simply modify the CSS by taking out the ‘text-shadow’ attributes where they are specified.
Best,
S
Can i use this theme with buddypress plugin? If yes, then how?
Hey, got it working! I seems that i am asking for too much!
Anyways, i wanted to remove sidebar from my home page so i added the following coding:
But still the sidebar is visible!
Hi,
I have not tried the theme with BuddyPress yet. Try to refer to the BuddyPress instructions and see how it goes.
Removing the sidebar from homepage will imply taking out the template call to the sidebar; make sure you delete it.
Sam
Hi,Nice theme!
Theme is some questions about the ‘hoverIntent.js’,and what is the role of this thing?
Hi,
that’s a good question. That file’s purpose is to put a delay on the mouseover function in order to avoid unnecessary calls upon hovering. Mainly, it sort of confirms your ‘intention’ when ‘hovering’, hence the name ‘hoverIntent.js’. You can read more about it at http://cherne.net/brian/resources/jquery.hoverIntent.html
S
great footer & post column/sidebars defined neatly. i’m downloading this, i’d like to put this into work right away.
THANKS A LOT SAM!!! I was going to add it on my own, but you reduced my effort! THANKS a LOT!
Great theme! Is there any way to use drop-down navigation on pages?
Hi Brian,
yes, that’s not very hard to do but it requires a very simple manual modification of one file. I’m sending you the modified files by email.
Best,
S
HI Sam!
Well, this theme on this website has shadows and a little glow, they are absent in the version available for download! The main reason, why your themes look good are because of shading and glow! Take example of either pixled or motion! Both of them have these features, where as these are absent in Function!
Hi,
I believe you’re talking about the text-shadows, correct? You are right, that wasn’t on the theme. I just added it, however, so the theme right now should include all the same shadows and glows. Thanks for the feedback!
S
Great template mate. How can I get the dropdown to work?
Hi Adam,
the drop-down works simply by using children categories (subcategories), up to 3 levels deep. They are automatically added underneath parent categories.
Best,
S
Thanks for the great theme!
Thanks, happy you like it!
